Information about FUNCHAL Funchal, which is almost five Centuries old, is the capital of Madeira, and is located on its south coast. Its name comes from fennel that was growing there in abundance. It is an enchanting town set on a glittering bay against a background of soaring green mountains. Winding cobbled streets meander between elegant colonial-style buildings, nestling into the shelter of the verdant hillside. Funchal city begins at the harbour and rises almost 2100m high on gentle slopes. Today, Funchal is a modern city which has 104.000 inhabitants. Certainly the most central point is the Sé cathedral, built between 1493 and 1514. You can also visit the museum of the Quinta das Cruzes on Calçada do Pico, the Church of Santa Clara which dates from the 16th Century, and the Old Blandy Wine Lodge which occupies part of a former Franciscan friary dating back to the 17th Century. Just walking through the city you will enjoy its magnificent gardens (the Botanic Gardens) and its picturesque streets and squares, or the refreshing sea breeze at Funchal Marina. You also may be interested in going on a tour of the cellars and wine-tasting sessions. Near Funchal is the famous toboggan ride from Monte to Funchal, which is an exhilarating experience and takes approximately 20 minutes. The fishing village of Câmara de Lobos to the west of Funchal offers spectacular views of the world's second-highest sea cliff, Cabo Girão (589 m). Also within easy reach of Funchal is the deep valley location of Curral das Freiras (Nuns' Refuge) near the centre of the island Half way between Monte and Poiso is the Funchal Ecological Park, which occupies about 1,000 hectares. In this park, you will find Pico Alto, in the Ribeira das Cales area, with its excellent belvedere looking out over Funchal, and Chão da Lagoa which will take you to two of the highest points in Madeira, Pico do Areeiro (1,810m) and Pico Ruivo (1,862m).
